Screening for Cancer – Why your organization should care

Organizations that have healthier employees are more successful, productive, and have less employee turnover. There are also fewer incidents of disability claims. It makes good business sense to invest in your employee’s health. One way you can do that is with health screening and education.

Statistics Canada’s most recent report estimates 206,200 new cancer diagnoses and 80,800 deaths from cancer occurred in Canada in 2017, and approximately 1 in 2 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime, and 1 in 4 will die of the disease. The most common types of cancer are lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer, and these account for about half of all cancer diagnoses and deaths.

Warning signs for cancer

Some of the common warning signs for cancer are:

  • Weight loss
  • Changes in digestion and bowel movements
  • Blood loss
  • Fever
  • Pain and tiredness
  • Skin changes
  • Persistent cough

And sadly, some diseases don’t have any warning signs at all. Especially pancreatic or kidney cancer.

Screening for cancer

Regular screening for cancer can significantly reduce the risk of employees in your organization getting this chronic disease. Some of the screening tests for cancer are:

  • Physical examinations, feeling for lumps around the body.
  • Lab and image tests
  • Biopsies

In women, mammograms and pap tests are a great way to screen for cancer. In men, prostate screening can be done with blood tests. Older adults are at an increased risk and should be screened more frequently than younger adults.

Prevention of cancer

The Canadian Cancer Society says about 4 in 10 cancer cases can be prevented through healthy living, which includes eating healthy and exercising. Education within your organization is crucial to make your employees aware of the warning signs. It is also not necessarily easy to exercise when you are working long hours or have a job that requires you to sit most of the day. Our health coaching can provide options for employees who are looking for ways to improve their health within their current occupation.
