Screening for dementia – why your organization should care

2 August 2019

Organizations that have healthier employees are more successful, productive, and have less employee turnover. There are also fewer incidents of disability claims. It makes good business sense to invest in your employee’s health. One way you can do that is with health screening and education.

More than 419,000 Canadians over the age of sixty-five live with diagnosed dementia, and that number could be larger since this information doesn’t take into account those under the age of sixty-five.

Dementia itself is not a specific disease as there is usually an underlying problem. According to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, dementia can be caused by Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disease, among others. Some of these causes are treatable conditions.

Warning signs for dementia

If you notice your employees have trouble with memory, difficulty planning or solving problems, difficulty with familiar tasks, get confused easily, problems speaking or writing, misplaces things, has poor judgment or decision making, withdraws from social activities, or has a change in mood or personality it might be beneficial to be screened for dementia.

Screening for dementia

Screening usually begins with a good look at a person’s entire medical history. From there, many cognitive screening tests can be performed to determine whether someone has dementia. If detected early, then any complications can be minimized, and a plan for long term care can be put into place. If the root cause is not a specific disease but a vitamin deficiency, for example, the symptoms may go away entirely.
